Foot and Ankle Program

The Foot and Ankle Program is designed to bring patients with conditions of the foot and ankle to their maximum level of physical activity and function. Our overriding goal is to return patients to normal activity with the knowledge needed to prevent re-injury or disability. Patients are evaluated and treated by physical therapists experienced with pain and/or dysfunction of the foot and ankle.

Effective rehabilitation begins with obtaining a detailed history and evaluation of the foot or ankle problem. Related and possibly aggravating conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis and vascular disease, are investigated. The therapist then observes the patient as he or she walks and/or runs to assess gait and range of motion.

Additional tests are performed to assess strength, sensation and circulation. Biomechanical assessments may be used to determine how the foot and ankle align with the lower extremities. Evaluation may also include assessment of individual joints and ligaments.

Foot and ankle therapists work with patients with the following conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel spur syndrome
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Bunion pre and post surgery
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints and Stress Fractures
  • After Fractures or surgical reconstructive procedures
  • Total ankle replacements
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Metatarsalgia

A customized treatment  program is developed for each patient based on the physical therapist’s comprehensive evaluation. To help restore motion and strength of the foot and ankle, improve balance, decrease pain and soft tissue restriction,  improve ambulation and prevent re-injury treatments may include:

  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Instruction in self management techniques
  • Balance and proprioceptive exercise
  • Gait training
